In the context of transformative fandom, they are anti-[ship] or [character]. They claim to be 'anti-pedo/incest', but are ONLY ever talking about fictional characters and 'ships' (pairings) they believe fit those descriptions. They will accuse people of horrible conduct and even real crimes based on what cartoon or anime characters they like to draw or pair together-- then use that as an excuse to harass, dogpile, violently threaten, suicide bait and doxx them.

The targets for their harassment campaigns (which can go on for years) are overwhelmingly female and/or LGBT, since these groups make up the majority of fandom. In addition to shipping, targets are also chosen over what fanart they drawn or fanfiction they write. Their real life actions or personal character do not factor in at all-- the decision to 'cancel' them is based on what fiction they like and produce and that alone. What fiction, do you ask? Antis will insist they go after 'problematic' content only...but their definition of 'problematic' changes very, very often.

So far in 2020 four fandom creators have been hospitalized as a result of anti harassment--at least three of which were due to suicide attempts. One was accused of liking a 'pedophilic ship' (which usually just means two characters with an age difference) when they actually don't at all-- and regardless, it's insane to drive a person to suicide over what imaginary people they pair together in their heads.

Antis treat their targets horribly, but it's got nothing on how they treat members of their own group. Anti circles are notoriously abusive, cult-like, and full of predators. Former antis have reported trauma from their experiences in these circles and continually suffer harassment from their former 'friends' after breaking out of them. A hashtag called #SupportExAntis is currently active on Twitter, where you can check out testimonials from folks who have managed to break free. There is also a great account called @skyshaymins which provides a first hand account from a former anti who has been a victim of their harassment for years as a result of leaving their circles.

As of the last three years, I've encountered three admitted sexual predators in anti circles, one of which has actually been to jail for rape. Antis excuse this shit while they continually harass artists for drawing ships with height differences. It should go without saying, but all this shit is deeply harmful to teens who get sucked into these circles with dangerous adults-- but their numbers are vast and only growing, and so is their worrysome disconnect with reality.

There is a proven link between anti-shippers and radfems (aka TERFs), who popularized their rhetoric on Tumblr by cross-posting their 'anti-kink' or 'kink critical' takes in anti-[ship] tags.

Tumblr users would then repost that rhetoric and tag it with 'OP was a TERF so I stole this' or something similar. This way, people adopted the beliefs while disassociating them from the negative implications of the 'TERF' label.

TERFs also recruit young lesbians by indoctrinating them with their rhetoric via fandom and shipping in discord servers and Skype chats.

This is why many of the young, more impressionable antis are lesbians, who often spread exclusionist rhetoric such as 'cishet aces aren't LGBT', 'queer is a slur', 'no kinks at pride' etc. Young trans people also internalize these ideas and continue to spread them without realizing where they're from.

This rhetoric is harmful because it encourages young lesbians to victimize themselves and isolate themselves from the rest of the community, placing the blame on other identities. There is strong evidence that ace exclusionism is a direct pipeline to becoming a full-blown TERF-- in fact, TERFs have straight up said they recruit that way.

The way antis attack 'fujioshi' for 'fetishizing gay men' is also a proven radfem dogwhistle, as it aims to delegitimize trans men by labeling them 'fujoshi' who transition because 'fiction affects reality' and yaoi made them think they were men. This goes along with the notion that trans masculine individuals are 'gender traitors' or trying to escape the patriarchy by 'pretending to be men'.

So until y'all stop talking like TERFs, I'm gonna call you fucking terflings.
